We love Scott the Intern, and even though he doesn’t understand Top 5 lists, he does know good music. Here is Scott the Intern’s “Top 5” list of bands to check out:
1. TriBeat: Trancey afro-funk including a sitar and didgeridoo; if you like bands like Particle, Disco Biscuits or STS9 you will enjoy this group; also if you enjoy the smell of B.O and patchouli http://www.myspace.com/tribeatmusic
2. Coolooloosh: hip-hop rock with a dash of klezmer; similar in style to The Roots only Jewified; the MC is an American ex-pat so the lyrics are in English and the drummer (‘Yogi’) is one of the best I’ve heard www.coolooloosh.com
3. Peshutei Ha’am: led by two guys from Shotei Ha’nevuah (another band whose music is worth checking out even though they’re not together any more http://www.myspace.com/shoteianevua) this band has a world-music, indie-rock vibe with a little trippiness thrown in for good measure; lyrics are in Hebrew
4. Ha’tikvah 6: An Israeli dancehall reggae group; in truth the music is just okay, but they are a lot of fun and put on a good show http://www.hope6.net/hebrew.html
5. Guns and Roses Tribute: this is exactly what it sounds like, only better, because the frontman sounds like Axl Rose, but looks like Prince
Special Mention:
Balkan Beat Box: An absolutely phenomenal group that puts on one of the most high energy shows I have been to in a long, long time. The best way I can describe them is if Nine Inch Nails and Prodigy got together and decided to play gypsy and klezmer music, this is what it would sound like. They are in the special mention category because they are currently based out of the US (New York, I think) and play Israel infrequently, but if they do they are a must see!! www.balkanbeatbox.com/
Infected Mushroom: One of the best dance/trance groups on the scene today. Live drums, guitar and an energetic frontman along with the electronic element; guaranteed to have you moving. They also play Israel infrequently which is why they are in the special mention category, but they are another must see if the opportunity arises! http://il.infected-mushroom.com/
Poor Man’s Green (formerly known as the Yiddishe Mountain Boys): An up and coming folk/bluegrass band with a bit of Jewish music added just for shiggles. Also happens to be the band that Scott plays in until he leaves in August. In the special mention category because, well, we’re special…in the good way.
