Bess’s Egypt Trip - Day 6

We took it easy today wandering around (seemed to be a theme for us in Egypt…) Old Cairo checking out the Ben Ezra Synagogue (where the Cairo Geniza was found) and the Koptic Christian area including the Hanging church.  After trying to feed a cat some Egyptian falafel we decided to take our back up plan of following a random Egyptian around the city.  As you can see from the picture at the airport we got our fill of American goodness by purchasing food and drink from the following: Starbucks, McDonald’s, AND Cinnabon!

We’ll always remember that you associate the following phrases with Americans:

  1. “Obama Good!” - When asked who would win in a basketball match between the US President Barak Obama and the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak they claimed that Mubarak would win (He’s 81 years old)
  2. “Welcome to Alaska!” - Only said in the southern part of the country…they think it’s hilarious.  Get it?  Egypt is hot? And Alaska is Not.  Isn’t that hilarious?  Don’t worry…we didn’t think so either.
  3. “Yankee Doodle Dandy” - only heard in Cairo…we are unsure if they know the entire song.

Thank you EGYPT!  We enjoyed your hospitality, even if we sometimes had to give a baksheesh (tip) to get it.

Boy, does it feel good to be home in Israel (and reunited with Molly!).
